Is Age Only a Number?
I being the mother of two always look forward to growing my kids into grounded and humbled personalities with strong academic background. With this objective and other unavoidable personal commitments , I had to quit my full time job in 2012 when my career graph was exponentially growing. Since I had been working full time for pretty 12 years, couldn’t sit at home without any work assignment. Therefore, I planned to explore avenues which would engage me for half of the day- when my kids were out for school. I did a couple of freelance projects, joined part time jobs and availed work from home opportunities to keep my career aspirations alive and to keep myself updated in my domain and forte. Just to keep myself engaged half of the day, I did projects which I had been doing in the beginning of my career. But, this never bogged me down as I was happy to managing both the personal and professional life. I was satisfied even with the pay checks… For me, satisfaction is more important as it satisfies you not the outside world.
I was on a sabbatical for full time job for 4 years working towards my goal. The Goal is important to set a milestone in the journey of a life. On reaching that milestone, I again pursued my full time career aspiration with the new skill set. I diversified myself from e-learning to digital marketing. I am a keen learner and always tended to learn new things and since today’s world is the digital world, I decided to keep pace with the digital world. In addition, the diversion was intended as the digital marketing professionals can be absorbed in any organisation not limited to a few organisations in case of e-learning.
I enrolled myself in the digital marketing course where I was learning with the students less than half of my age. I enjoyed the learning session as it took me back to my school and college days. The only difference was that in school and college, the classmates were of your age, but here the classmates were too younger than you who were Millennials.
Post completing the course, I was on my job hunting spree and was lucky to get the exposure of six months in the digital marketing domain of E-commerce platform. As I wanted to explore more about digital marketing field, I started looking forward to get the job in the core digital marketing agency to get more exposure and learning of holistic digital marketing strategies.
To my surprise, there are companies who look at the age of the person, not the skills and expertise. Age is just a number for me. Back to back work without taking any pause is my biggest asset. How can a company put a question mark on your capability by just looking at your age??
